Gerard Vreugdenhil has been a proud member of the Dutch boulangerie team for many years, the Dutch national team in the field of bread. This team represents the Netherlands at international level against other teams. The bakers in the boulangerie team belong to the top of the Dutch bakery sector, you can only be admitted after a tough selection and a high-level competition. It is a group of bakers where craft, craftsmanship and knowledge are shared.
Participating in a competition is preceded by very intensive training, which can sometimes take up to a year. Week after week rehearsals take place with two or three selected members. This takes place at different locations in the country, in order to make the products under as many different conditions as possible. Our company’s modern bakery is also used for training courses for the boulangerie team. Competitions always consist of three parts: bread, viennoiserie (toured, leavened products, such as croissants and brios rolls in different flavours) and a decorative piece.
Nice to know: of the approximately 16 members of the boulangerie team, four members have worked at Bakkerij Vreugdenhil. Two of them rolled into the profession as little boys and for them this craftsmanship is like second nature.
Gerard has already participated in many competitions and won several prizes. A small selection from the selection:
2011
1st place Coupe de la Boulangerie (best bread baker in the Netherlands and thus his entry into the team)
2013
3rd place IBA cup (IBA cup is an international competition at the second highest level)
2015
1st place European Championship Boulangerie (European competition for the highest division. Together with his three team members Gerard could call himself ‘the best bread bakers in Europe’)
2019
2nd place in the preliminary round of the Coupe du Monde de la Boulangerie (the ‘World Cup’ in the field of boulangerie)
